Mernda Primary School recognises the importance of being a sustainable school for the benefit of the planet’s environmental health. Our goal is to manage resources efficiently and integrate sustainable practices by educating and motivating the whole school community to live more sustainably.
To support this the school endeavors to provide students with a wide range of knowledge in various environmental and sustainability areas. Units of work have been created that encompass environment and sustainability such as:
- Water use and conservation
- Planting seeds, seedlings and native plants
- Reduction of litter and waste (Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)
Classrooms implement reduce, reuse, recycle practices to reduce the amount of waste we are sending to landfill.
To support our practice in reducing waste, every classroom has an environment tub that is used at recess and lunchtime for students to return their rubbish free lunch containers. Our students and teachers recycle paper and cardboard in separate bins and this is collected for recycling. A student group manages this collection weekly.
